11/8/09 – Validate Your HTML Website

If you have been reading the tutorials on HTML on this blog and have made a website then you should validate it to see if you did it correctly. The W3 Validator is free and you can validate your website with it. You just enter in the url and click check. It should detect HTML type and encoding automatically but if it detected wrong then just change it. If you want the website to be fixed automatically then check the Clean With HTML tidy and then click revalidate. At the bottom of the page should be a the fixed website’s html code. That is all you do but you should make a back up of the website just in case it messed up your website.

11/12/09 – How To Watch A Star Wars Movie In CMD

This is a cool thing you can do with your computer if you have telnet enabled. If you do not have telnet enabled then go to turn on off windows features and turn telnet on. Once you have telnet enabled click start then run then cmd and click enter. When CMD is opened type in telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl and click enter. It will load for a little bit and then a star wars movie shows up in CMD. This is a cool thing you can do with CMD. If you have telnet disabled CMD will not recognize the telnet command.

11/11/09 – Shutting Down A Computer Remotely

If you have a server or you want to trick your friend then being able to shut down a computer remotely might be a good think to know how to do. To do this you will need the computer’s IP address and that is all. First open CMD click start then run then cmd. Once cmd is opened type in shutdown -i. A new window should of opened up click add. Type in an IP address if you want to test it on yourself type in 127.0.0.1 and click ok. Pick what you want the computer to do you can restart, shutdown, or Annotate unexpected shutdown. You can chose to warn the user or not and chose how long you want the warning to appear. You can chose to make it planned or not and the reason and you will need to enter a comment. Then click ok and the computer should do what you told it to do.

11/10/09 – Changing The Title Of A CMD Window

If you are tired of the default CMD title then you should change it for the session you are using it. To do that you open cmd by clicking start then run then CMD. Once CMD opens type in title title, that changes the title to the word title. To change it to something else change the second word title to anything you want so if you want the title to be CMD then type in title cmd. You should notice that at the top of the window it says your username then a colon then the title you chose. If you quit CMD and open it again the title goes back to the default title and if you open a new CMD window before you close the first one the new window has the default title.

11/9/09 – Finding Out Your IP Address

If you have wanted to see what your IP address is it is not very hard to do. To find your IP address go to WhatIsMyIP.com. At the top of the page there should be Your IP Address Is:___. The IP address should be a group of 4 numbers separated by periods. To find out the IP addresses of things having to do with your computer click start then run and then cmd and type in ipconfig/all and hit enter. That shows some more IP addresses related to your computer.

If you have a website you might want to make links you can click on and insert images instead of plain text. Below is how to insert a link.

If you notice it started with that is showing that it started and ended. the href=” is telling the computer it is the url and it is starting. After the url is a “> that is telling the computer it is done with the link’s url and is starting what the link will be called. That is pretty simple you replace the url with whatever url you want and replace the text with what you want the link to be called on the website. Below is how to insert an image.

That is how to insert an image without adding some more information and is not the best way to insert images below is hot to use the alt attribute.

The alt attribute is used if the image does not appear on the website it will have the text instead. This is a good thing to get used to doing. There is even more you can add to the image. Below is how to tell the computer the image dimensions.

This is another good thing to do because The internet browser will already know where the image is going to be and how big it is. If you don’t then the text might move when someone is reading it because an image just loaded.

That is how you make an image link to another website if you click on it. Below is how to make a border around the image.

If you have not used color in your HTML document you should try and see that using color can be a good thing. The first thing you need to know about colors is that there are certain web safe colors just like web safe fonts. The web safe fonts you can enter there names and they will work. You can use any color if you enter in the hexadecimal color number (like white is #ffffff). To change the background color you type in the tag below.

That makes the background color white if you want it black it is #000000 and if you want to pick a color a good website to go to is http://www.colorpicker.com/. Below is how to change the font color to black.

That is the hello world website. If you have that as your website the text is plain and everything is default. This is how to do some basic formating like size and type and stuff like that. Tomorrow’s tutorial will be how to use colors in the HTML document. The first thing you might want to do is make something bold. Below is how to make the word hello bold.

Notice that I used the tag that is how to make something bold. To end the bold tag use you can start and end it anywhere so if you wanted to you could of made just the H bold. After that you might want to make something italicized. Below is how to make World italicized.
